Board of Directors’ Meeting
Thursday, August 6, 2009
Falmouth, Maine

  • Call to Order:  President Tim Nelson called the meeting to order at 9:09 a.m.

  • Calling of the Roll of Officers:  Jon Reed, Al Farris, Paul Demers, Dick Lambert and Denise Kolreg (MMA).

Absent: Barbara Skelton, Freeman Abbott, Jodine Adams, Dabney Lewis, Kathy Joiner

It was determined there was a quorum of five (5).

  • Reading of the Minutes of the Previous Meeting:

Motion made by Dick Lambert, seconded by Paul Demers, all approved the June 18, 2009 Board Minutes.

  • Communications and Bills: It was noted that the Secretary of State filing was completed by MMA. The MBOIA dues renewal forms have been sent out with updated letter.
  • Report of Officers’ and Treasurer’s Report:
    • Report of the Officers’ and Treasurer’s Report:  Barb Skelton absent. No report.

  • Report of Committees:

    • Education Committee: There was a brief discussion that no one in the group has received any emails from Richard Morgan. It was noted that licenses go from 5 to 6 years, and this is only basic certification. They would have to drop the basic credit courses in order to get 12 credits.  There will be new cards sent with the new certification papers. The State Office will no longer be providing technical service.

Information was given in a notice that there is a $15 surcharge on plumbing permits and that this is on the website.  For full system regulations you have to remit separately, but to the same place.  Russ Martin also noted that this information is in the newsletter. It was noted that DEP is not getting money and that the Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is getting the money.  Should hold this money until we get official notice from State.  The check will be forwarded to Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife; this is why they want a separate check.  (See information on the website.)

    • Discussion of Classes: It was noted that they got an email from Martha Byron that they are looking for educational events and speakers for their Conference.
  • ICC Annual Convention – It was reported that next year’s Convention will be in Rhode Island.  The dates are not yet determined. A group will be going.

September Meeting - Jon Reed would like us to send him documents that he can manipulate (not pdf formats).  He noted that the speaker will be Wayne Barrows, International Fire Stop Council.  MMA needs to bring an LCD panel projector. The speaker will provide his own laptop and PowerPoint.

    • Legislative Committee:  Legislative issues are quiet right now due to the session being out.  They would like to talk more about setting up listserv, and need more information about this.

  • Unfinished Business: No unfinished business.

  • New Business:

    • New Members:  Motion made by Jon Reed, seconded by Paul Demers, all approved Stephen A. Sanborn, from Hiram, Brownfield, Newfield, and Porter as a new member to MBOIA.

    • Nomination Committee: Upcoming Elections - Three Board of Directors members: Al Farris, Jon Reed, Dabney Lewis.

They will discuss the issue of members that have not paid to date at the next Board Meeting.  It was noted that we could send a final notice.

    • Spring Class:  Tim Nelson noted that the Augusta Civic Center is the proposal submitted to date when it comes to pricing.  They need to review all the numbers. It was noted that Sebasco Harbor Resort was close to Bath, and might be a good place to host the 2010 Spring Conference. Joan Kiszely has been looking at different places, but not too many can accommodate the price range. The further south we go, the more we lose anyone attending from the north.  Paul Demers noted that we should only offer it for two days, and open the audience up to architects, plumbers, and contractors.  They need to find a cheap and local facility.  Tim Nelson will talk or email Joan Kiszely to get proposals from Holiday Inn by the Bay and the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.

    The following topics/sessions were suggested:

    • ICC for webinar
    • Fire (Richard Lambert will take the lead)
    • Plumbing (Tim Nelson will take the lead)
    • Electrical Updates (Al Farris will take the lead)
    • Codes & Engineering Jon Reed will take the lead)
    • Legal Enforcement/Land Use Law (Paul Demers will take the lead)

Jon Reed will take the lead on the 2-day Conference.

  • The Good and Welfare of the Association:  No Report.
  • Adjournment:  Jon Reed made a motion to adjourn; seconded by Paul Demers, all approved to adjourn the meeting at 10:31 a.m.
